The Red Shawl

Broch bought a red shawl in Rajasthan. He loves it. Shawls are really useful here in India as temperatures vary; it's a sort of a universal garment). The brilliant color makes a great photo accent as well.

The Taj is breathtaking - really no other word for it. We visited at 6:30am, as the sun was rising and clearing the mist away. We also visit Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort. The scale of these national monuments is inspiring.

Our son Broch is enrolled in Leander (Austin, TX) Independent School District's International Baccalaureate Program. Broch has been able to spend extended time in India, where he is learning to respect all people, places, and religions.

Ranthamborre National Park

2009-12-10_12

We've arrived at the Tiger Moon Resort just outside of Ranthambore Tiger Reserve. It was a 4-hour drive from Jaipur.

Riklesh, the resident naturalist and orinthologist, has already given us our meal and safari schedule.  Broch is ecstatic because they've told him there is a man here that will show how to make pottery and let him try it himself. It's very green here and the birds are singing beautiful harmonies together.

Lunch begiins in 1/2 an hour and then the first tiger safari stars an hour later.

Fireworks over Jaipur

2009-12-09_21

Broch and I just finished dinner at the rooftop restaurant at our hotel. We enjoyed quite a fireworks display around the city due to the wedding season. All day we've been seeing painted elephants and jewel-bedecked white horses being sent out to pick up grooms. Then there were all the uniformed marching bands heading toward the bride's homes.  And the elaborate draping and flowers at the various venues. Now the fireworks are entertaining the thousands of guests at the seemingly hundreds of celebrations.

Early morning train to Jaipur

2009-12-08_06

One more early alarm... our train from Jodhpur to Jaipur is pulling out of the station at 5:55. The RAJASTHAN tours representative met us at the Ratan Ilas hotel and took us all the way to our seat on the train. He also had the hotel pack us breakfast to go. Our big luggage is in the trunk of our driver's car so that we've got less to juggle on the train. He left for Jaipur last night and will meet us at the station when we arrive. I'm glad we've got 2 nights at our next stop. It will give us a little more chill time.
